Malaysia’s mining sector is relatively small and largely consists of a sector for coal, iron, and non-ferrous metals. Malaysian mines produced 3,500 tons of tin in 2014, falling slightly from the 2013 production of 3,700 tons. Malaysia has an estimated 250,000 tons of tin reserves. Malaysian production of rare earth metals rose slightly from 180 tons in 2013 to 200 tons in 2014. Malaysia has estimated rare earth metal reserves of 30,000 tons.

Processing facilities are run by private companies incorporated in Malaysia. Foreign companies are allowed to have a 100% stake in a local company or form a joint venture.

Market Summary
