Indonesia Mining Overview

Mine Production Information

Indonesia has largely banned the export of unprocessed minerals, with the ban on nickel ore taking effect in January of 2014. Nickel production dropped in Indonesia from 440,000 tons to 240,000 tons between 2013 and 2014, though Indonesia maintains a large reserve of 4,100,000 tons.

The ban hit bauxite mine production particularly hard, with production falling from 55,700,000 tons in 2013 to only 500,000 tons on 2014. 2013 had been a particularly strong year for bauxite production, with production having risen from 31,400,000 tons in 2012 as Chinese companies stockpiled in anticipation of the ban. Indonesia’s bauxite reserves are estimated to be 1,000,000,000 tons. Some companies negotiated deals to export various ores in early 2015. Copper production fell from 504,000 tons to 400,000 tons between 2013 and 2014. Indonesia has estimated copper reserves of 25,000,000 tons.

Indonesia increased its gold mine production slightly between 2013 and 2014, moving from 61 to 65 tons per year. Indonesia’s estimated gold reserves are 3,000 tons. Indonesia was the world’s leading exporter of tin in 2014, though mine production fell from 95,200 in 2013 to 84,000 tons in 2014.

Value-Added Products

The government is currently investing heavily in facilities to refine and smelt Copper and other ores. International companies are active in the production of these goods. Cement production rose from 56,000,000 tons in 2013 to 60,000,000 tons in 2014. However, Indonesia’s clinker capacity fell from 51,000,000 tons to 50,000,000 tons in the same time period.

Major Exports

Nickel • Bauxite • Gold • Copper

Market Summary

Pig Iron and refined nickel and tin. Gold and Silver projects are also in early stages. In general Indonesia’s gambit to focus on value added projects is in a turbulent place because of the oversupply of many minerals in the region. Future alterations to the ban on the export of raw materials should not be discounted. Major company Freeport McMoRan is currently in the process of divesting from PT Freeport Indonesia. PT Freeport Indonesia has made a deal to resume copper exports.
