Chile Mining Overview
Mine Production Information
Chile’s leading copper reserves are worked by multiple large-scale private companies and the state-owned Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO). Medium and small-scale private companies account for less than 10% of annual production. Chile is also a major producer of copper-associated commodities.
Value-Added Products
About 75% of the copper produced in Chile is processed in concentration plants using comminution and flotation. Mining companies in Chile have shown substantial interest in improving processing technology to optimize water usage and promote energy efficiency.
Major Exports
Copper • Gold • Silver • Lithium • Iodine • Rhenium
Market Summary
Depletion of Chile’s current copper reserves has seen the Chilean government look to other resources, such as lithium, to take up the slack. Barrick’s Pascua Lama project, a large-scale gold, silver, and copper open pit mining project, has estimated reserves of 17 million ounces of gold and 635 million ounces of silver. However, the Chilean government has yet to approve the project. Canada is a major minerals supplier of the United States. As an export-focused country, Canada is well positioned to expand despite increasing environmental pressures and the globalization of the industry as a result of its mineral resource base.
