Cambodia is seeking to lure investment from abroad to develop its nascent mining industry. The Phum Syarung Gold Project will eventually be the first officially licensed gold production in Cambodia. 139 exploration licenses had been issued to 91 companies by 2013, according to the Cambodian General Department of Mineral Resources. Exploration by foreign companies is encouraged; for example, Vinacomin (Vietnam) is exploring for bauxite in Mondul Kiri province.
